What Jounce checks before it sends
Short answer
Jounce needs a verified email, a postal address, real web links, some live text, and at least one person who can get mail. It also stops for a brand kit you haven’t saved, a block it can’t show, a personalization tag in a design that goes out as a picture, too many of those designs, or a gap left to fill; the rest is advice.
The Review step runs two kinds of checks. A few things must be true before the email can go, and the send button waits for them. The rest are notes. They’re worth fixing, but it’s your call. The email can go without fixing them.
What must be true
- Your email address is verified. If not, the send button opens a window: Verify your email to send. It says where the link went and offers Didn’t get it? Resend. I’ve verified checks again. If you signed up with Google, you’re verified already. See Verify your email address.
- A postal address is on file. Marketing email must carry one, and Jounce prints it in the footer. Without it, a note reads Your postal address has to be on every email. Select Add it, fill in the form, and select Save address. See Add your mailing address.
- Your brand kit is saved. Every email you create sends in your brand kit, your saved colors, fonts, and logo. Until you save one, a note reads Save your brand kit to send this email. Select Open your brand kit, or the send button, and the kit opens. Check it and select Save kit, then select the send button again.
- Every block can be shown. If a block uses a design Jounce no longer offers, a note reads Your email has a block with a missing design. Delete it in the editor. The send button stays off until you do. See Why does a block say it can’t be shown?.
- Every link is a real web address. A button or link pointing at a typo is named. The note reads Your button points somewhere that isn’t a real web address. Fix it in the editor. The send button stays off until it’s fixed. In the editor, selecting its line under Before you send selects the first one.
- No personalization tag or link sits in a design that goes out as a picture. Some designs go out as one picture, the same for everyone. So every reader would see the tag itself, and nobody could tap the link. The note says whether it’s a tag or a link, and where to move it: a tag into text outside the picture, a link onto the design’s button. The send button stays off until you move the tag or link. In the editor, Before you send names it in a line such as One personalization tag is inside a picture.
- The email doesn’t have too many designs that go out as pictures. This one is for every email you create. One email can send only so many of those designs, and each video on its own is one. A note reads, for example, Your email has too many designs that go out as pictures. Delete two of them in the editor. The number is how many to delete, and the send button stays off until you do. In the editor, select the line for it under Before you send, and Jounce selects the first one to delete.
- Nothing Jounce left open is still in the email. This one is for every email you create. A note flags each line of sample text, and each testimonial with sample or made-up words. It also flags a missing number, an empty picture, or a countdown with no end time. The placeholder words in an item you add to a list count as sample text. A note reads, for example, One line of your email still has sample text. Replace it with your own words in the editor. The send button stays off until you fix it. A detail Jounce filled in, such as a price or a date, is yours to keep and never stops the send. See What an AI draft leaves to you.
- The email has some live text. Live text is words a mail app shows as text. The words inside a design that goes out as a picture don’t count. With almost no live text, a note reads This email has almost no live text, and inboxes may filter an all-image email as spam. The send button stays off until you add a text block, or turn a block’s hidden words back on under Elements. In the editor, Before you send names it in a line such as The email still needs some text. An email that opens in the earlier editor gets this check as the send starts instead.
- Someone can receive it. The count is above zero, no address you typed is in red, and no segment you picked was deleted.
- The audience fits your daily limit. While your list is warming up, Jounce emails only so many people a day for it. A bigger audience keeps Continue off on the Recipients step, where Request an earlier increase asks Jounce to lift it sooner. One that fits once your earlier emails are a day old can still be sent. It waits, then goes out by itself. The Review step speaks up only when that wait would make it more than a day late, and then the email waits for your OK. See Why can’t I email my whole list yet?
What Jounce points out
Each note is a sentence or two above the send button, most important first. Apart from the one about social icons, at most two show at a time. Fix one and another can take its place.
- Some social icons have no link and won’t show. Select Add links to fill them in. Save links saves them to your account. Cancel closes the window and saves nothing. If you send without adding links, the email goes out with those icons left out. See Why did the links in my Social block change?.
- Your video frame has a play button in the picture, but nothing opens when someone taps it. In the editor, select the picture and add a link. Three designs pair a button with a picture that has a play button drawn into it. A tap opens the picture’s own link. If it has none, the tap opens the link on the button under it. See Link a video layout to your video. A video on its own has no button. A missing link there keeps the send button off instead. See Add a video on its own.
- There’s almost no text in this email, or Most of this email is images. Spam filters and anyone who doesn’t see images have little to go on. Add your main point as text. With almost no live text, the live-text note above takes its place, except in an email that opens in the earlier editor.
- Your email has an empty image, so readers don’t see anything there. Add a picture to it, or delete it. This note shows on an email that opens in the earlier editor. There, an empty image reads Your image goes here, and the sent email leaves it out. To fill one, see Add an image to your email. To delete one, select it and press the Delete or Backspace key.
- The note gives the email’s size and says it is past Gmail’s ~102KB limit, so the end gets clipped, and the unsubscribe link with it. An email that is nearly there reads close to the limit instead. Trim the longest sections. See Why does the editor say Gmail will clip this?.
- A number of links start with http://. Chrome asks readers to confirm before it opens a page that isn’t secure, so some clicks stop there. Switch them to https://.
The editor’s Before you send lists these five too: the play button, text, empty images, size, and http:// links. That way you can catch them before the send steps. In an email that opens in the earlier editor, the preview shows them above the phone instead. See Preview your email.
In the editor, Before you send also flags an email past Gmail’s limit and links that start with http://.
