Why can’t I delete this block?

Open Emails

The editor opens from any draft.

Short answer

Usually a part of the block is selected, not the whole block: press Esc, then choose Delete block in the tools beside it. Your mailing address and the unsubscribe line aren’t blocks, so they always stay.

Nothing is wrong with the email. Every block can be deleted, and what’s in the way is usually what’s selected. This is for every email you create. For an email that opens in the earlier editor, see the last section.

A part of the block is selected

When a part is selected, such as a photo or a title, the panel’s heading reads Block › and the part’s name. Press Esc, or select Block at the top of the panel, so the whole block is selected. Then choose Delete block in the tools beside it, or press Delete.

A block that can’t be shown has Delete block in the settings panel instead.

One thing stays quiet: the key goes to whatever you clicked last, so after using the panel, click the block in the email first.

Jounce says why

When the Delete key refuses a part, Jounce says why:

  • This design holds at least 2 products. A list keeps its smallest number of items. Delete the whole block instead.
  • This photo is already empty. Select the whole block to delete it. The photo spot has no picture left to remove. Press Esc, then Delete.
  • This element is part of the design, so it can’t be removed. The part has no switch under Elements. Press Esc, then Delete, to remove the whole block. Or choose Swap design for a layout without it.

A part hides instead

A part with a switch under Elements hides when you press Delete. Jounce says Hidden — it stays in this block’s Elements list, with a Show button. In a list it hides on every item at once. A photo empties first: Jounce says Photo removed and offers Undo. See Show or hide part of a block.

The social icons in the closing layout hide too, and your links stay in your Brand kit. See Edit your social links from an email.

The mailing address and the unsubscribe line

Every marketing email must carry the sender’s postal address and a way to unsubscribe. They aren’t blocks: they show under the last block, and a click on them selects nothing. Jounce writes both lines itself when it sends. See The address and unsubscribe blocks.

In an email that opens in the earlier editor

The mailing address and the unsubscribe line

There, they are blocks at the bottom of the email. They have no Delete button, they can’t be dragged, and nothing can be dropped below them. Point at them and a dashed line reads Footer · required — stays at the bottom.

The bottom of the email with the dashed line reading Footer · required — stays at the bottom, above the mailing address.

Press Delete on either, and Jounce says why: Your business address is required in marketing emails or The unsubscribe link is required in marketing emails.

Their panel’s font, weight, size, color, and alignment change only how they look in the editor. Jounce sends both in its own small print. The address itself is the one saved as your default on the Address settings page. See Add your mailing address.

A part of a designed layout

A photo, a caption, or a button inside a designed layout isn’t a separate block. Delete it and Jounce hides it. Jounce says Hidden — it stays in this block’s Elements list, with a Show button.

To bring it back later, select the block, open Elements in the panel, and turn it on. Deleting the last visible part deletes the whole block.

A part with no switch in Elements belongs to the design itself. Jounce says This element is part of the design, so it can’t be removed. Swap the layout for one without it.
