Why does the editor say Gmail will clip this?
Short answer
Gmail shows about 102KB of an email in full, then cuts off the end, and the unsubscribe link with it. Trim the longest sections.
Gmail shows an email in full only up to about 102KB of text and code. Past that it shows the beginning and a View entire message link. So the end of your email is hidden, and the unsubscribe link with it. Your draft is fine, but long emails reach fewer eyes.
Jounce still sends the email as it is. The size is the words and the code that lays them out. Photos don’t count, since they load on their own.
In every email you create
The editor every new email opens in has no size label.
Once the email is past Gmail’s limit, a line shows under Before you send, at the foot of the settings panel. It reads Gmail will cut off the end of this email. The line sits under Worth a look · won’t stop the send, so the email still sends.
Select the line, and Jounce selects the block that adds the most. Under Block at the top of the settings panel, a note reads This block adds the most to the email’s size. Then it says one of two things:
- Without it, Gmail shows the whole email: that block alone can bring the email under the limit.
- Shorten it first: that block alone isn’t enough. Start there, then trim others.
The note shows whenever you select that block while the email is past the limit. The note and the line don’t give the size.
Trim the email back under the limit, and the line shows a check and reads Gmail will show the whole email. A moment later it goes.
Like any line under Worth a look, it has Hide at its end, which puts it away for this email.
With a screen reader, you hear the line’s words once: when the email passes the limit, or opens past it.
In the earlier editor
An email made in the earlier editor still opens there. Once an email gets heavy, a size label appears at the bottom right of that editor. It shows the size and one of these notes.
| It reads | What it means |
|---|---|
| Close to Gmail’s limit | Under the limit, but not by much |
| Gmail will clip this | Over the limit. Gmail hides the end |
| Links push this past Gmail’s limit | Under the limit as written, but click tracking makes every link a little longer as it goes out, and that tips it over |
| Under Gmail’s limit | You trimmed it back. All good |
In the preview and the send steps
In an email that opens in the earlier editor, the preview shows a note above the phone with the email’s size once it’s close to the limit or past it. The Review step of the send steps shows that note for every email, so you can decide there.
The send steps, and the earlier editor’s preview, show two notes of advice at most. When two others come first, this one waits until you fix one of them.
The fix
Trim the longest sections. A long email usually has one or two blocks doing most of the damage. Look for a long paragraph, a list with many items, or a layout with many links. Shorten them, or move the detail to a page on your site and link to it once.
If the note is about links, link each page once. Every web link you add carries tracking, so ten links to the same page cost ten times what one does.
