Link actions

Open Emails

The editor opens from any draft.

Short answer

A link action is what Jounce does when a subscriber clicks: add them to a segment, remove them from one, or set a custom field. It lives under a button’s link and under a block link.

A click tells you something about the reader. Link actions let that click sort them for you. The person who opens your workshop page joins the workshop segment, with no form or list to keep by hand.

This is how it works in every email you create. For an email that opens in the earlier editor, see the last section.

Where it lives

  • A button. Select the button. Once a web address is in the box under Link, Link actions appears under it. A button inside a list item, such as one row of Alternating photo rows, has none.
  • A block link. Under Block link, once the address is in. See Link a whole block.

A link on words in a paragraph takes no actions. Nor does the link on a video layout’s picture. To use actions there, give the layout’s button a link of its own. A video on its own has no button, so it takes no actions. See Link a video layout to your video.

Only a web address gets actions. An email or phone link opens in the reader’s own apps, so Jounce never sees the click.

The three actions

Choose Add action, then pick one under Choose action:

Action Then pick
Add to segment A segment under Choose a segment
Remove from segment A segment under Choose a segment
Set a custom field A field under Choose a field, and the value under Set to

A finished row folds into one line, Add to Newsletter. Select the line to change it; the × beside it removes it. Add action adds another; the button greys out when the link holds as many as it can.

With no segments, the row says No segments yet. Create one on the Audience page. With no custom fields, No custom fields yet. Add one from any subscriber’s page. See Create a segment and Custom fields.

If you clear the address

The rows stay, with the line These actions need a link first — add one above. Put an address back and they run again.

What a click does

The actions run when a subscriber clicks that link in the sent email. A second click doesn’t undo the first: adding someone who is already in the segment changes nothing.

In an email that opens in the earlier editor

Link actions sit in two more places there, with the same rows and the same three actions:

  • A text link. The lightning button in the link box opens the rows for those words. On an email or phone link it says so: Actions need a web link.
  • A part of a layout. Under that part’s Links to box.

Buttons and block links carry them there too.
