Add your own words around the unsubscribe link
Short answer
With nothing selected in your email, type your words under Unsubscribe line in the settings panel. They go before and after the link, and the link itself always stays.
When you’re done, the small print at the bottom of your email says the unsubscribe link in a sentence of your own, like Had enough? You can unsubscribe anytime. The link stays, and it still works the same way.
A new email starts with No longer want these emails? Unsubscribe. An email you made before this setting existed reads Unsubscribe on its own, as it always has, until you add words.
- Open the email.
- Select the unsubscribe line at the bottom of the email, or the space around the email. Nothing is selected, and the settings panel’s heading reads Email. If the panel is folded to a thin edge, select the edge.
- Find Unsubscribe line in the panel. It holds two boxes with a locked chip that reads unsubscribe between them.
- Type in the box before the chip, the box after it, or both. Empty, they read Words before the link and Words after the link. The bottom of the email changes as you type.
The chip is the link. You can’t type over it, move it, or delete it. In your email it stays underlined, in the same small print as the rest of the line.
The link’s word is always unsubscribe, in English, whatever language your own words are in. It takes a capital U when it starts a sentence.
The line belongs to this email. Your next new email starts with Jounce’s sentence again.
Take your words out
Clear both boxes. The email then reads Unsubscribe on its own.
What the line can’t hold
The line is one short, calm sentence about stopping these emails. It can’t hold:
- more than 120 characters, counting the word unsubscribe
- a personal tag like {firstname}
- a web address, an email address, or a phone number
- the signs < and >
- emoji, or mostly capital letters
- more than one question mark, or !!
- words that say the link doesn’t work, such as don’t unsubscribe or unsubscribe later
- words that push the reader to stay, such as are you sure, last chance, miss out, or sad
- why the reader gets your emails, such as you signed up or you’re getting this because
- a promise the unsubscribe page doesn’t keep, such as one click, instantly, preferences, pause, or reply
If your line breaks a rule, the note under the boxes names it once you leave the box. Then it says Until then, this email shows the link on its own. The email still sends. It goes out with Unsubscribe alone until you fix the line.
Note An email that opens in the earlier editor has no Unsubscribe line setting. The confirmation email has no unsubscribe link at all. See What Jounce adds to the bottom of every email.
