The text formatting toolbar

Open Emails

The editor opens from any draft.

Short answer

Select words and a small toolbar appears above them. As the words allow, it holds bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, two kinds of list, a link, a PDF attachment, and Personalize.

The toolbar shows only while some words are selected. Click into the words, drag across them, and it appears above them. What it offers follows the words you select. This is the toolbar in every email you create. For an email that opens in the earlier editor, see the last section.

Marks

Bold, Italic, Underline, and Strikethrough. A button that applies to the selection is shaded. Press it again to remove the mark. The usual shortcuts work: ⌘B, ⌘I, and ⌘U on a Mac, Ctrl on Windows.

Lists

Numbered list and Bulleted list turn the selected paragraphs into a list. Press again to turn them back. Only words that take lists offer them, such as the Text layout’s paragraph.

Link opens a small box for the address. ⌘K (Ctrl+K) opens it too. See Add a link to text.

The box has no lightning button: link actions sit on buttons and block links instead. See Link actions.

Attach a file

The paperclip links the selected words to a PDF you upload. Jounce hosts the file and the words open it; the email itself carries no attachment. With nothing selected, the file’s name is inserted as the linked words.

The file has to be a PDF under 10 MB. Jounce turns down anything else with a message, and your text is left as it was.

Personalize

The @ button inserts a subscriber’s first name, last name, or email address in place of the selected words. See Personalize with a subscriber’s name.

What the words offer

Link tools means Link, the paperclip, and Personalize.

Words Marks Lists Link tools
The Text layout’s paragraph, or an intro Yes Yes Yes
Other body text, such as a letter’s or a list item’s Yes No Yes
A heading Yes No No
A label, a price, or a caption No No No
A button’s words No No No, the link is in the panel

Words with a No in every column show no toolbar at all.

A block link doesn’t grey Link. A link you add to words is kept, but the sent email opens the block link wherever a reader clicks in the block. See Why can’t I add a link to this text?

In an email that opens in the earlier editor

The same toolbar appears there. It follows the words and steps out of the way of the block’s own toolbar.

The formatting toolbar floating above a selected line of text, with the Link button ringed between the list buttons and the paperclip.

The link box there has a lightning button, which adds link actions to the words. What each block offers:

Block Marks Lists Link tools
Text, Signature, Footer Yes Yes Yes
Title Yes No Yes
Button label No No No, the link is in the panel
Words on a picture Yes No No

A block link greys Link and the paperclip there, so everything in the block opens that one address. The tooltip says so. Text links are off — everything in this block opens the block link. Words that were already linked keep the button, so you can remove that link.
