Why does my A/B test say Won’t finish?

Open Emails

Results open from a sent email.

Short answer

The test group got both subject lines, but the winner can’t go to the rest of your list, and the results page says why. Part of your list already has the email, so the campaign can’t go out again; duplicate it if you need a new send.

An A/B test sends in two rounds: both subjects to the test group, then the winner to everyone else (the winner round).

Won’t finish means the first round went out and the second can’t. Your email is saved, and the people in the test group keep what they got.

Jounce closes the campaign for good as soon as the winner round is due, so the status label soon reads Partly sent when the test sends went out, or Failed when they didn’t.

At the top of the results page, a warning box names the cause. Its title counts the people who didn’t get the email, such as 708 people didn’t get this email. Up to before the count means the round broke off partway, so some of them may have it.

The reasons

  • The person who scheduled this campaign is no longer in this workspace. Jounce sends the winner for that person, who has left.
  • Jounce can’t tell who scheduled this campaign.
  • Jounce can’t find an unfinished A/B test for this campaign.
  • Jounce can’t confirm it ran an A/B test for this campaign.
  • An earlier try at finishing this A/B test stopped partway, so part of your list already has this email.

Why it can’t be sent again

The test group is already holding the email. Sending the campaign again would send it to them a second time, and Jounce keeps no per-person list to leave them out. Each note ends the same way. A duplicate would send a second copy to anyone who already has it.

To reach the rest, Duplicate the email from its card menu and send the copy. The people in the test group get it a second time. See Duplicate an email.

When it can be finished

If the winner round stopped before it sent to anyone, the box usually offers Review and finish instead. The label then reads Partly sent rather than Won’t finish. See Finish an A/B test that stopped.

Waiting on you

A round that is only waiting reads Waiting on you, not Won’t finish. The box reads The winner round is on hold: the person who scheduled this campaign hasn’t verified their Jounce account email yet.

Once they verify it with the link Jounce sent them, the rest goes out on its own. If it’s more than a day late by then, it stays on hold instead, as On hold explains.

On hold

A winner round more than a day past its time reads On hold, not Won’t finish. A sending pause, an account email not verified in time, or a delay on Jounce’s side can hold it that long.

The box reads The winner round is on hold: it’s more than a day past its time, so Jounce won’t send it on its own. The rest of your list would get it a day or more after the test group, so Jounce leaves the choice to you.

Write to hello@jounce.com to send the rest. An Admin or Manager can stop it instead with Cancel sending in its card menu. See Cancel a scheduled or sending email.
