The unsubscribe link and page
Short answer
Every campaign and automation email ends with a link to unsubscribe. It opens a plain page that asks Unsubscribe from these emails?, and the Yes, unsubscribe button takes the person off your list.
The link in the email
The word Unsubscribe sits at the bottom of every email you send. It’s underlined, in small print under your mailing address. Jounce writes that line itself, so it’s there whatever the email looks like and however it was built. See The address and unsubscribe blocks.
A new email sets the link in a short sentence, No longer want these emails? Unsubscribe. You can put your own words around the link instead. Inside them it reads unsubscribe, or Unsubscribe at the start of a sentence. The words are yours. The link is always Jounce’s. See Add your own words around the unsubscribe link.
The link is personal to that reader and that email. If it’s forwarded, it still only unsubscribes that reader. It works on your campaigns and on the emails your automations send.
The confirmation email is the one email without this link, because it lands before the person has confirmed. Ignoring it is how they opt out. See The confirmation email.
The page
The link opens a plain page with one question and one button:
- Unsubscribe from these emails?
- Click below and you won’t receive any more marketing emails from this sender. Nothing else changes.
- Yes, unsubscribe
Opening the link changes nothing. The person is unsubscribed only when they press the button. Then the page reads You’re unsubscribed, with the line You won’t receive any more marketing emails from this sender. You can close this page.
Below that sits a small Jounce sign-off: Leaving should be this easy. and Made with Jounce. It’s the same switch as the line at the bottom of your emails, so turning that off on the Brand page removes it here too. See Remove the Made with Jounce line.
Note Some mail security tools open every link in an email before the reader sees it. Because the page waits for the button, those tools can’t unsubscribe anyone.
This sender means your workspace. If you belong to more than one, an unsubscribe from one doesn’t touch the others. Each keeps its own list.
The page isn’t yours to design. It has no link to your Preferences page (the one you edit under Opt-in setup). See The Preferences page.
The mail app’s own button
Gmail and Yahoo can show an Unsubscribe button or link beside the sender’s name. It works because each campaign and automation email tells the mail app how to unsubscribe.
A press on the mail app’s button or link unsubscribes the person with no page in between, and Jounce records it the same way. Other mail apps may not show the button, but the link at the bottom of the email works in any of them.
The mail app may offer to mark the email as spam at the same time. If the person takes that offer, that’s a spam report to their mail provider. Jounce marks them Complained only when the provider passes it on. Otherwise they read Unsubscribed. See Why does it say Marked as spam?.
What happens next
On Audience, the person’s status turns to Unsubscribed. Their Activity list gains the line Unsubscribed. The results page of the email that carried the link counts the unsubscribe. Jounce sends them no more campaigns or automation emails.
If Jounce can’t save the unsubscribe the moment it arrives, it keeps trying on its own. So these changes can take a little longer.
You can’t put them back on your list. They can come back themselves, through one of your forms. See Coming back after an unsubscribe, a bounce, or a complaint.
Other messages the link can show
| The page says | What it means |
|---|---|
| This link didn’t work | The link is broken or has expired. A link in a very old email can expire. The mail app’s own button still works, and any later email carries a fresh link. The page also tells them they can ask you to take them off the list. |
| You’re being unsubscribed | Jounce couldn’t save the unsubscribe right away, and keeps trying on its own. The page says their request went through and they can close it. |
| That didn’t go through | Jounce couldn’t save the unsubscribe or keep it to finish later. The page says they may still be subscribed and to try the link again in a moment. |
