How double opt-in works
Short answer
With opt-in on, someone who fills in your form is Unconfirmed until they click the link in a confirmation email. That click makes them Subscribed, saves their consent, and shows your thank-you page.
Double opt-in means a person says yes twice: once on your form, then once more with a link Jounce emails them. Only the second yes puts them on your list. The Opt-in setup page says why: it keeps your list to real, willing people and protects how your mail lands.
The path, step by step
- Someone submits a form whose Ask people to confirm their subscription (opt-in) switch is on. They appear in Audience as Unconfirmed.
- Jounce sends them the confirmation email, if the workspace owner has verified their email address. See The confirmation email.
- They select Yes, subscribe me in the email. At a personal inbox such as Gmail, that one tap is enough: the page that opens confirms them by itself. A work or school address presses Confirm subscription there.
- They become Subscribed, and Jounce shows them your thank-you page. See What subscribers see when they confirm.
Until step 4, Jounce sends them nothing else. The link is good for 7 days.
What the click records
Jounce saves the moment they confirmed as their consent. It also notes the method (Double opt-in), the form they used, and the address and browser they clicked from. You’ll find it all on their page in Audience. See Where a subscriber came from.
The workspace owner’s email about a signup comes at this click, not when they fill in the form. See Get an email when someone signs up.
People who already exist
- Someone who is Subscribed and fills in the form again stays as they are. Jounce never asks them to confirm twice. They join the form’s segments right away, and that can start an automation. See What happens when someone submits.
- If someone is Unconfirmed or Unsubscribed and fills in the form again, they get the confirmation email again, whether the switch is on or off. Jounce holds the email back if one went out a short while ago, or if they’ve already had several. Their click puts them back on your list.
- If someone bounced or marked an earlier email as spam, they get no confirmation email. Their click can’t confirm them either.
- Say you deleted someone who was Subscribed. If they sign up again on a form with the switch on, they come back Unconfirmed and get the confirmation email, like anyone new. But deleting doesn’t clear an unsubscribe, a bounce, or a spam complaint. If they had unsubscribed, they come back as Unsubscribed and get the confirmation email. If they bounced or marked an email as spam, they get nothing.
Where the switch and the pages live
The switch is per form, in the form’s Settings. See Ask people to confirm their subscription. Every form in the workspace shares one email and one page to land on. You set both on Settings › Opt-in setup. See The Opt-in setup page.
