Why isn’t anyone entering my automation?

Short answer

Usually the automation isn’t live, or the trigger hasn’t happened for anyone since it went live. People already in the segment when you launched don’t enter.

Nothing is wrong with the steps. Someone enters only when the trigger happens for them while the automation is live. One of these is in the way.

It isn’t live

Open it and read the status. Draft means it was never launched. Paused means nobody enters until you relaunch.

Ready means Jounce has switched automations off for now, for everyone who uses Jounce. Nobody new enters, and anyone who subscribes or joins the segment during that time doesn’t enter later. The automation takes people in again on its own once Jounce switches automations back on. See Automation statuses.

The trigger hasn’t happened since you launched

Launching doesn’t reach back. Someone already in the segment doesn’t enter. Neither does anyone who subscribed through the form before you launched. The next person who subscribes, or is added to the segment, does. To reach the people already there, send them a one-off email instead. See Choose who gets your email.

The trigger points at a different form or segment

Select the trigger card and check the Form or Segment row. Someone who joined through another form or segment isn’t picked up. See The trigger.

They joined through a form

A new signup enters an automation that starts with Someone subscribes to a form. They also enter one that starts with Subscriber is added to a segment, if the form sends people to that segment. Someone already on your list who fills in the form enters only the segment’s automation, never the form’s.

Did a new signup miss the segment’s automation? The form may not send people to that segment. Open the form’s Settings and check Where subscribers go. See Send new subscribers to a segment.

The person isn’t Subscribed

Only people with the Subscribed status enter. Someone who signed up through a form but hasn’t confirmed enters when they confirm. Confirming brings them into automations that start with the form, or with a segment it sends people to. Adding them to any other segment before they confirm starts nothing.

Someone who is Unsubscribed, Bounced, or Complained doesn’t enter. See Subscriber statuses.

They’ve been through it before

A person enters an automation once. Subscribing again, or rejoining the segment, doesn’t start it a second time.

They came from a saved filter

Saving a filter as a segment starts nothing. The people saved into that segment don’t enter an automation that watches it. People added from their page or the list, by a CSV import, or by an Action step do enter. So do people who join through a form.

They came from a long import

They enter a little later. If Jounce couldn’t check every address during the import, it gives itself time to check the rest first. That’s a few minutes, or up to about an hour for a very large list. There’s nothing for you to do.

Everyone has finished

In it now counts the people inside at this moment. When the last email has gone out, the count reads 0 again. Open View insights from the card’s menu to see how many entered and how many finished.
