Editing a live automation
Short answer
Change the steps, and new subscribers get your changes while people already inside finish the path they started on. Change an email, and it reaches everyone that step hasn’t sent to yet.
Open a live automation and a line sits under the top bar. It reads This automation is live. Your changes to the steps only reach new subscribers — anyone already in it finishes the path they started on. That sentence is the rule for the steps. Emails work differently.

The steps and their settings
The moment someone enters, Jounce keeps a copy of the steps as they are. That person follows the copy to the end. Add a step, delete one, change a wait or a condition, and it applies to everyone who enters after that. Nobody already inside is moved, skipped, or sent something twice.
The emails
An email isn’t part of that copy. Jounce reads the email when the step sends it. So your edit reaches everyone the step hasn’t sent to yet, no matter when they entered. Anyone who already got that email doesn’t get it again.
The Subject, Sender name, and Preview text rows in the step’s panel work the same way as the email. In an older step that sends a shared email, a Subject change reaches only people who enter after it. See Edit an automation’s email.
Adding the first Send email step
Launch asks for your postal address only when the automation has a Send email step. Add the first one to a live automation with no address on file, and a yellow strip appears above the line.
The strip reads Jounce is holding this automation’s emails until you add your postal address. It has to be on every email. Select Add address on it to fill in your address. See Why hasn’t the next email gone out?
Who can edit a live automation
Admins and Managers can change a live automation’s steps. Editors see the cards and their panels, but not the + or the trash icon. Their line under the bar reads This automation is live — an admin or manager can change its steps. See Why can’t I change the steps of my automation? Anyone in the workspace can rename it.
If you’d rather nobody moves while you work
Pause stops every subscriber where they are. Make your changes, then Relaunch. See Automation statuses.
