Pause an automation

Short answer

If you’re an Admin or a Manager, select Pause in the top bar, and nobody new enters. Everyone inside holds where they are, and nothing goes out until you relaunch.

When you’re done, the automation is paused. Nobody enters and nobody moves. When you relaunch, everything picks up where it left off.

  1. Open the automation. The status label in the top bar reads Live.
  2. Select Pause, beside the label. Only Admins and Managers see it; an Editor sees the label alone.
  3. The label reads Paused, and a message says Your automation is paused. Subscribers stay where they are until you relaunch.

A live automation's top bar, with Undo, Redo, and the Live label before the Pause button, ringed at the right.

What a pause does

  • Nobody enters. Someone who sets off the trigger while it’s paused stays out. They don’t enter later when you relaunch either.
  • Everyone inside holds at the step they’re on. An email that comes due waits. A wait that runs out keeps them at the delay.
  • Nobody is dropped. The people inside stay counted in in it now, and they carry on from the same step when you relaunch. See Relaunch a paused automation.

Editing while paused

Anyone in the workspace can edit a paused automation’s steps, Editors included. People already inside finish the path they started on. Anyone who enters after you relaunch gets your changes. See Editing a live automation.

Next step

When you’re ready, see Relaunch a paused automation.
