Why can’t I change the steps of my automation?

Short answer

The automation is live and your workspace role is Editor, so the + and the trash icon are hidden. The line under the bar says an admin or manager can change its steps, and nothing you did was lost.

First, point at the line between two cards. The + rests faint there until your pointer reaches it. If it appears, nothing is locked.

If the line stays empty and pointing at a card shows no trash icon, the automation is live and your role is Editor. Admins and Managers change the steps of a live automation.

As an Editor, you can open any step’s panel and read its settings. You can also rename the automation and build any draft or paused one. You can’t add, delete, or change a step while it’s live. The line under the top bar says so: This automation is live — an admin or manager can change its steps.

The automation keeps running as it is.

The fix

  • Ask an admin or manager in your workspace to make the change.
  • Or ask them to Pause it. A paused automation’s steps are yours to edit, and they relaunch it when you’re done.

Your role is shown in the account menu. See Workspace roles.

If a change bounced

You may see That edit didn’t save — only an admin or manager can change a live automation’s steps. The automation keeps running exactly as it is.

Your change is not saved. You changed a setting in a step’s panel, or the automation went live or your role changed while the page was open. Refresh the page to see what you can do.
