Why doesn’t Finished match Entered?

Short answer

Some people are still inside, some left, and some stopped partway. In it now, the people who left, and Stopped partway make up the difference, and nobody is missing.

Everyone who entered is somewhere. Finished counts the people who walked past the last step, and the rest are in one of three other places. Nothing was lost, and the automation keeps running.

Add the four up

  • In it now is on its own card. These people are still walking the path, most of them waiting at a delay or a condition. They move to Finished in their own time.
  • Left is one or two notes under the cards. Some people went out through an Exit automation step in the path. Jounce took some out itself; the note says it closed their run. Each note only appears when it has someone to count.
  • Stopped partway is a note in amber. A step couldn’t run for these people, and they stand still. Most can be resumed once the step is fixed.

Add In it now, the people who left, and the people who stopped to Finished, and you get Entered.

Three lines under the cards — an amber one saying three people stopped partway, then one saying a person left because Jounce closed their run, then one saying a person left at an Exit automation step.

Left at an Exit automation step

4 people left at an Exit automation step. Whether that’s good news depends on where you put the step. Open the automation to see where the step sits.

Where the step sits is the whole meaning. Every Jounce template with an Exit automation step puts it on a condition’s Yes branch. The people who opened or clicked go out that way, because the automation has done its job. On a template, then, the number is good news.

Move the step, or build your own path, and it counts whoever reaches the spot where you put it. See How steps connect.

An unsubscribe on its own doesn’t take someone out. Jounce skips their next email and moves them on, so they still reach Finished. See How subscribers move through an automation.

Jounce closed their run

2 people left because Jounce closed their run. That happens during a resume, or after their email address changed. Nobody designed this ending. There’s nothing for you to fix.

It happens two ways:

  • You resumed stopped subscribers, and Jounce found some could no longer get mail. They had unsubscribed or been deleted, their address had stopped working, or they had been quiet for a long time. Jounce takes them out instead of sending to them. See Resume stopped subscribers.
  • You changed someone’s email address. The old address leaves the automation, and the same automation never takes the new one in again.

If the note says left before finishing

4 left before finishing. An Exit automation step sent them out, or Jounce closed their run. This older, single line shows when Jounce couldn’t split the two this time. The total is still right and still adds up. Reload the page to try again.

If people stopped partway

Open the automation. The strip at the top of its steps says why, and offers Resume subscribers when they can be resumed. See Why did subscribers stop partway?
