Why won’t my file import?

Short answer

It’s usually the file’s shape or a step you haven’t finished. The message on screen says which, and your list stays the same until the import runs.

Until the import runs, nothing changes on your list. Find the message you saw.

That file has no columns Jounce can read. Check it’s a CSV with a header row.

Jounce couldn’t find a header row. Open the file and make sure the first line names the columns, with a comma between each. Jounce can’t read a spreadsheet saved in its own format. Save it as a CSV first. Prepare your CSV file shows the shape.

I have an Excel file

The file picker only offers CSV files. Jounce can’t read a spreadsheet dropped onto the box in its own format. Save it as a CSV first. Prepare your CSV file says where to find that in Excel and Google Sheets.

That file is over the 10 MB limit. Choose a smaller one.

The file is over the limit. Remove columns you don’t need, or split the rows into two files and import each.

Continue stays off on Match your columns

Two things hold it back. A column must map to Email, and the permission statement must be ticked. If the step says Match a column to Email to continue, set the address column’s Maps to field to Email. Then tick Everyone on this list asked to hear from me. and Continue lights up.

The import didn’t finish. Usually nothing changed, but check your subscribers before you try again.

A long list may have started anyway, or a batch may have landed before it stopped. So check your Subscribers page before you try again.

You’re back on Add them to a segment. Jounce may have already made the segment for this import. Keep the same name and the next try uses it. Select Import subscribers again. If it happens twice, check your connection.

That file is over the 50,000-row limit for one import.

One import takes 50,000 rows at most, and your list is as it was. Split the file into smaller files and import each one.

Your workspace has started its 10 imports for this hour.

A workspace can start 10 long imports an hour and 30 a day. Only a list that imports in the background counts. Past either limit, Jounce turns the next one away before it adds anyone.

If you’ve used the hour’s 10, try again next hour. Once the day’s 30 are used, the message says so, and the next import can start after midnight Pacific time, which may not be midnight where you are.

Your workspace has imported its 250,000 rows for the day.

A workspace can import 250,000 rows a day. Only a list that imports in the background counts. Your list is as it was. Try again after midnight Pacific time, which may not be midnight where you are.

If some of the day is left, the message says how much, as in That file has 60,000 rows, and your workspace can import 40,000 more today. Import a smaller file now, or this one after midnight Pacific time.

Verify your email to import

You signed up with an email address and haven’t verified it yet. Jounce imports a long list in the background and emails you when it’s done, so it confirms the address is yours first.

Open the email Jounce sent you and select Verify email in it. If the page that opens asks, select Verify email again. If the email hasn’t come, Didn’t get it? Resend in the dialog asks for another. Then select I’ve verified, then Import subscribers again. Your list stays as it was until you do.

If the message reads Verify your email address to import a list this long., it’s the same step. See Verify your email address.

Jounce couldn’t find the file you uploaded.

The file didn’t reach Jounce, so the import didn’t start. Select Import subscribers again. If you see Jounce hit a problem starting this import. instead, wait a few minutes, then try again.

The screen says Your list is importing and nothing seems to happen

That’s a long list importing in the background. People show up on your Subscribers page as Jounce adds them. Jounce emails you when it’s done. Imports that finish in the background explains it. It also says what to do if the list stops growing and no email comes.
