What a segment is

Short answer

A segment is a saved group of subscribers you name, like Newsletter or Wholesale, and a person can be in as many as you like. Send to it, leave it out of an email, or start an automation when someone joins it.

A segment is a label you put on people. If you’re used to tags or groups in another tool, it’s the same idea. The group has the name you give it and a color you pick. Jounce counts the people in it that Jounce can send to.

Being in a segment changes nothing about a person’s status. It says who they are to you, not whether Jounce can send to them.

A segment is a group, not a rule

Jounce doesn’t move people in or out of a segment on its own. Someone joins when you add them, when a form or an import puts them there, or when you save a filter as a segment. They leave when you remove them.

To find people by what they do, such as who opened lately, use a filter. To keep that answer, save it as a segment. The segment keeps the people who matched when you saved it. It doesn’t follow the filter after that.

Where segments show up

  • On the Subscribers page. Each row shows its segments as colored labels. The Segment menu narrows the list to one.
  • When you send. The recipients step asks which segments to send to, and lets you name segments that won’t get it. If someone is in a segment you leave out, Jounce skips them, even when another segment includes them.
  • In automations. An automation can start when a subscriber is added to a segment. An Action step can also add people to one on its own; see The Action step.
  • On a form. A form can put everyone who fills it in into a segment.
  • In an import. A CSV import lands in a segment named for the day, unless you rename it or clear the name.

How many

A person can be in any number of segments, and there is no cap on how many segments you make. Two segments can’t share a name. Capital letters and extra spaces at either end don’t count, so vip and VIP are one segment.
