Why can’t I change a subscriber’s email address?

Short answer

The sentence under the New address field says why, and nothing has changed. Most often, someone else on your list already has the address, or mail to it has bounced before.

The person is unchanged, still on your list under their old address. The dialog’s message names the reason; find it below.

The button won’t press

Change address stays gray until the field holds a full address, like name@example.com. If you leave the field with less, it says Enter a full email address, like name@example.com.

That address is already a contact on your list. Nothing was changed.

Someone on your list has that address, maybe with different capitals. Jounce won’t merge two people. The dialog offers Open that contact, which takes you to them. Move any segments across by hand, then delete the record you don’t need. See Delete subscribers.

Mail to that address has permanently bounced, so the address wasn’t changed.

That mailbox has rejected mail for good, so nothing you send can reach it. Check the spelling with the person before trying again.

That domain can’t receive mail, so the address wasn’t changed.

The part after the @ doesn’t accept email at all. It’s usually a typo in the domain name.

That’s already this contact’s address. Nothing to change.

You typed the address they have.

This contact is deleted, so their address can’t change. Restore them first.

The person is off your list. Add the same address again with Add subscriber › Add manually. That brings them back with their history. Then the change goes through. See Add a subscriber by hand.

That contact no longer exists. Nothing was changed.

The record was deleted or erased while you had the page open. Go back to the list and find them again.

Your workspace can change up to…

Jounce limits how many addresses your workspace can change. This protects delivery for everyone on Jounce.

The messages begin Your workspace can change up to 20 email addresses a day and Your workspace can change up to 100 email addresses in 30 days. For one person, it’s This contact’s address has already changed 3 times in 90 days.

The daily message says when the count resets. The 30-day message says to get in touch with support if you need more. To fix many addresses at once, import a CSV with the right addresses instead.

That didn’t go through. This contact is unchanged — try again.

The connection dropped before Jounce could answer. Try once more.
