Imports that finish in the background

Short answer

A long list imports in the background. The screen says Your list is importing, you can close the tab, and Jounce emails you when it’s done.

A short list finishes while you watch. A list of several hundred rows or more imports in the background instead. Jounce picks the path from the file’s length, and both end the same way. In the background, Jounce checks and adds the people on its own, so you’re free to leave.

What you see

After Import subscribers, the screen says Your list is importing. Below that: Jounce is adding your 1,200 subscribers to “Jun 26 import” in the background. It names every segment this import lands in, starting with the dated one. Under it: Close this tab whenever you like — Jounce emails you the moment it’s done.

Back to audience takes you to the list. People show up there as Jounce adds them. A list this size is usually done in minutes.

Started from the send screen, the button reads Back to recipients. It takes you back to the email you were sending, with the import’s segment already picked. Continue waits there until the import is done. Either way, the close button at the top right does the same as the button.

Haven’t verified your email address yet? Jounce asks you to before a long import starts, since that’s where the email goes. Why won’t my file import? walks through it.

The email

When the import finishes, Jounce emails whoever started it, at the address they sign in with. If a teammate started it, the workspace owner gets a copy too. The subject matches the outcome:

Subject When
Your subscribers are in At least one person was added.
Your list is up to date Nobody was new, but people you already had were updated.
Your import finished Nothing was added or updated.
Your import didn’t finish It stopped partway. See below.
Your import didn’t start It never got going. See below.

If anything couldn’t be saved, the subject is Your import finished, even when people were added or updated.

The first line counts who joined and names each segment this import put them in. For example: 1,200 new subscribers joined “Jun 26 import” and “VIP”. Everyone the import took in is in all of them. Then it lists how many were already on your list, and how many you had deleted are back on it.

Why does a deleted person come back? See When an email already exists.

A line such as 2 rows repeated an email address — each address counts once means your file listed some addresses on more than one row. Then it lists how many were rejected, one line for each reason. Anything Jounce couldn’t save comes last. See who’s in opens your Segments page.

Note The email counts the rows rejected for each reason. It doesn’t list the addresses. For a background import, there is no rejected-rows file to download. To see who was left out, open Audience. Pick the import’s segment under Segment, then compare the list with your file. Why were some rows rejected? explains each reason.

If something couldn’t be saved

Couldn’t be added counts people new to your list who weren’t added. Import the same file again. Under When an email already exists, choose Skip them. The missing people are added, and everyone already on your list stays as they are. Choosing Update their details and keep their history instead would also bring back anyone in the file you’ve deleted.

Couldn’t be updated counts people you already had. They stay as they were, so there’s nothing you need to do. To bring your file’s changes to them anyway, import it again and choose Update their details and keep their history. It also brings back anyone in the file you’ve deleted.

Got both lines? One import with Skip them is all you need.

Couldn’t be read counts rows in your file that Jounce couldn’t use. Importing it again won’t change that, so write to hello@jounce.com.

If it stops partway

When Jounce can’t finish an import, it sends you an email headed Your import didn’t finish. Everyone it saved before it stopped is on your list.

To finish, import the same file again. Under When an email already exists, make the same choice as the first time; the email names that choice. Nobody is added twice. Update their details and keep their history also brings back anyone in the file you’ve deleted since.

On the Segment step, Jounce fills in a name with today’s date. If you’re importing again on a later day, that name would start a second segment, so clear it. Then, under Segments you already have, pick each segment the email names. For example, Jun 26 import and VIP.

If it never starts

Rarely, Jounce can’t get an import going at all. Then it emails you a few hours later, headed Your import didn’t start. That import changed nothing on your list. Import the same file again, the same way as above. If you’ve already imported that file again, Jounce skips this email.

If no email comes

Import emails share the limits on confirmation emails, the ones that ask new subscribers to confirm. Your workspace has a daily limit on them, and after a sending problem Jounce can pause them for everyone who uses Jounce.

When a limit is full or a pause is on, Jounce skips the import email and doesn’t send it later. The import still finishes, so check your list under Audience.

The workspace owner’s copy goes out only once the owner has verified their email address. Jounce also skips the email for anyone whose address bounced one of its emails. It skips anyone who marked a signup email, an import email, a daily-limit email or the Sending is paused email as spam, too.
