How filters combine
Short answer
Inside a group, all means every row must be true and any means at least one. Between groups, And needs every group and Or needs at least one.
A filter is a set of yes-or-no questions. Groups say how the answers add up.
Inside one group
Every group starts as Matching all of these. A person is in when every row in the group is true of them. Switch all to any and one true row is enough.
Two rows in an all group narrow the result. The same two rows in an any group widen it.
Between groups
Select New filter group and a picker appears between the boxes, reading And. Each group answers yes or no on its own. And keeps the people every group said yes to. Switch it to Or to keep anyone at least one group said yes to.
One picker rules the whole dialog: with three groups, it is And between all of them or Or between all of them.
An example
You want active newsletter readers. You also want anyone who clicked lately, whatever they signed up for:
- Group 1, Matching all of these: Status is Subscribed; Segments is in any of Newsletter; Last activity in the last 90 days.
- Or
- Group 2: Last clicked in the last 30 days.
Someone in the newsletter who opened last month is in through group 1. Someone outside it who clicked last week is in through group 2.
Reading the count
The number at the top of the dialog is the result of the whole arrangement. The quickest check is to change one thing and watch it move. If it stays at zero, see Why does no one match my filter?
