When an email already exists

Short answer

An import never makes a duplicate: you update or skip anyone already on your list. Either way their status, join date, and history stay as they are.

Jounce tells people apart by email address, and capitals don’t matter. Say a row in your file matches someone already on your list. Your choice under When an email already exists decides what happens. Neither choice changes their status, their join date, or their opt-in record.

Note A row can hold an old address, one someone used before their email address was changed. Jounce sets that row aside under either choice, as replaced by a newer address, and the person’s record isn’t touched. The one exception is when someone on your list has that address now.

Update their details and keep their history

This is the default, and it’s safe to run more than once.

  • A first or last name in the file replaces the one on their record. An empty cell leaves the name alone.
  • A custom field in the file replaces that field’s value on their record.
  • They join the segments in the file and the import’s own segment. They never leave a segment they were already in.
  • Their status stays as it is. Someone who unsubscribed stays Unsubscribed. Only they can sign up again, through one of your forms.

The summary counts these people as updated, not new.

Careful Someone you had deleted comes back onto the list. Their history comes back with them. Check the file for people you deleted on purpose before you import it again.

You can see how many came back. The summary adds a line such as 2 of these you had deleted are back on your list. They’re part of the updated count, not extra to it. An import that finishes in the background says the same in its email.

A repeat import on the same day lands in the same dated segment. On another day it makes a second segment with the same people. If you don’t want it, delete it from Segments.

Skip them

The row is left out and their record isn’t touched. The summary counts it as rejected, with the reason already on your list. The rejected-rows file lists the address, so you can see who was already there.

Someone you had deleted stays deleted. Their row reads deleted from your list instead.

Note Adding one person by hand works like Update their details and keep their history. Jounce updates their name and keeps everything else. Only the import offers Skip them.
