How Jounce measures activity
Short answer
A person’s last activity is the most recent of their last open, their last click, and the day they joined. Opens include some a mail app made for them; clicks are the surer sign.
Jounce keeps three dates for each subscriber: their last open, their last click, and the day they joined your list. Last activity is whichever of the three is most recent. In the filter builder, it is the Last activity filter. It is also behind the Engaged and Gone quiet presets.
Why joining counts
A person who signed up yesterday hasn’t had a chance to open anything. If only opens and clicks counted, they would look quiet from day one. A Gone quiet filter would then sweep in your newest readers. Counting the joining day means nobody reads as quiet before they have had time to be.
For someone you imported with an opt-in date in your file, that date is their joining day. Without one, it is the day of the import. See Keep your opt-in proof when you import.
Not in the last, and never
Not in the last 90 days also takes in everyone who never did the thing at all. A person who never opened an email hasn’t opened one in 90 days. Never, on Last opened and Last clicked, is only those people.
Opens include auto-opens
To protect the reader’s privacy, some mail apps load every email’s images as it arrives. Jounce sees that as an open and can’t tell it from a real one.
Those auto-opens are why the filter builder notes Includes auto-opens from some mail apps whenever a row asks about opens, clicks, or activity. They are also why the Most engaged preset counts clicks instead. The note shows on that preset too.
What is counted
Emails opened and Emails clicked count emails, not actions. An email opened three times counts once. Jounce keeps the dates and the counts, and not a log of every open.
