Why can’t I change a member’s role or remove them?

Short answer

You’re not an Admin of this workspace, so rows show a role badge instead of a menu, or it’s your own row. No one changes their own role or removes themselves, and nothing is wrong with the workspace.

Changing roles and removing people is an Admin’s job, and no one changes their own role. The member list you see is correct. What’s missing is the control, and the reason is one of these.

Every row ends in a badge, and there’s no Invite button

You’re a Manager or an Editor in this workspace. The account menu says so on the line under your email: Editor in this workspace. Only Admins see the role menu, the ⋯ (three dots) beside each person, Invite, and the Workspace name card.

Check first that you’re in the right workspace; the account menu names it under Workspace. If you are, ask an Admin to make the change, or to make you an Admin. See Change a member’s role.

There’s no Remove button

You’re an Admin, and removing someone is a choice in the ⋯ at the end of their row: Remove from workspace. See Remove a member.

It’s your own row

The row with the You badge has no role menu, whatever your role, and you can’t remove yourself. Another Admin changes your role. To take yourself out of the workspace, use the last card on the page instead. See Leave a workspace.

Jounce says they haven’t verified their email address

You picked Admin for someone whose email address isn’t verified yet. Jounce says ⟨address⟩ hasn’t verified their email address yet. Nothing changed — ask them to verify it, then try again. They keep the role they had. Admins can change roles and remove people, so Jounce checks first that the address is really theirs.

Ask them to verify their email, then pick Admin again. If they need the steps, see Verify your email address. Moving someone to Manager or Editor never asks.

If Jounce says Jounce couldn’t check that address just now. Their role hasn’t changed — try again, pick Admin once more.

Jounce says Only workspace admins can do this

Your role changed to Manager or Editor while the page was open, so the page is out of date. Nothing was saved. Reload the page to see what your role can do.

Jounce says That person isn’t a member of this workspace

Someone else removed the person, or they left, after your page loaded. Reload the page to see the current list.
