Why won’t Jounce accept my handle?
Short answer
The box turns red and says why: the length, a character or hyphen Jounce can’t use, a word Jounce keeps back, or another workspace’s handle. Change it and the check runs again.
Jounce checks a handle a moment after you stop typing, on the Public address page and in the Your address box in Share. A handle it can’t use turns the box red with one reason under it. That reason stays put, even when you select something else on the page.
Your saved handle, if you have one, is untouched. Fix the handle and the check runs again on its own.
What each message means
| Jounce says | What to do |
|---|---|
| Handles are 3–30 characters. | Make it longer or shorter. |
| Use letters, numbers and hyphens — no spaces or symbols. | Take out the dot, underscore, or other symbol. A space you type becomes a hyphen on its own. |
| Handles can’t start, end, or double up on hyphens. | Move or remove the hyphen so the handle starts and ends with a letter or number, with single hyphens between. |
| That handle’s reserved. Try another. | Jounce keeps some words for itself, such as help, mail, and app. Pick a different word. |
| That handle’s taken. Try another. | Another workspace has it, or had it once and moved on. A handle stays with its workspace, so pick a different one. |
| Pick a handle for your public address. | The box is empty. Type a handle. |
There’s no Save handle button
Save handle appears when the box holds a handle that is different from your saved one and reads Available. If you type your saved handle back in, nothing appears under the box, and there is nothing to save. A handle this workspace used before reads This is your current address. and can’t be saved either.
If nothing appears under the box after you type a different handle, the check didn’t run. Save handle still appears, and Jounce checks the handle as it saves. Or change a letter and change it back, and Jounce checks again.
In Share there is no Save handle. On a draft, the publish button saves the handle. On a page that’s already live, Claim address does. Jounce holds either button while the box is red or empty, and while the check is still running.
If Jounce couldn’t run the check at all, the button stays live and checks the handle as it saves. See Claim your handle.
It said Available, then the save failed
Someone else claimed the same handle in the moment between the check and your save. The line under the box reads That handle’s taken. Try another. and your current address is unchanged. Pick another handle.
Two other lines can show there. Only workspace admins and managers can do this. means your role changed while the page was open. Public address changes are capped at 10 an hour. Nothing changed — try again later. means this workspace hit the hourly limit on address changes. Wait, then save again. The steps are in Claim your handle.
