What the Automations tab counts

Short answer

Entered counts each person once for each automation they went into during the time range. Emails sent, opens, clicks and unsubscribes are totals over every automation’s whole life, including steps and automations you have since removed.

The tab adds up every automation in the workspace. Only one number, who entered, has a date, so it follows the time range. Most of the rest are totals over each automation’s whole life. That’s because an automation sends each time a person reaches a step, not on one day.

For one automation’s numbers step by step, see How Jounce counts an automation’s numbers.

Entered

  • Entered counts the people who went into an automation in the range. A person enters each automation only once, on the day its trigger happened for them.
  • A person who entered two automations counts once in each, so the card can be higher than the number of people.
  • People can enter only a launched automation. A Draft adds nothing. A Paused one keeps its people but lets nobody new in. See Automation statuses.
  • The range sets which days count. Someone who entered before the range shows on the automation’s insights page, not in this card. See Why doesn’t the Automations tab match an automation’s insights?

In automations now

In automations now counts the people inside any automation at this moment. They’re waiting on a time delay or between one step and the next. Someone who has finished or left isn’t counted. The table’s In it now column is the same count for each automation, and adds up to the line.

Emails sent, opens, and clicks

  • Emails sent counts every email every automation has sent, across every step, over all time. Emails from a step you have since removed still count.
  • Opens and clicks each count once per person for each email. A click on any link counts.
  • Open rate and Click rate are shares of the emails sent. An email sent from the Emails page uses delivered mail instead, so a rate here can run a little lower. Neither is wrong.
  • Emails you send from the Emails page never count here. They’re on the Emails tab. A test email you send yourself never counts anywhere. See What the Emails tab counts.

Some mail apps open an email for the reader before they see it, so opens run high. The ⓘ on Open rate says so. Clicks are the more reliable number.

Bounces, complaints, and unsubscribes

Unsubscribes is a share of every email sent, shown to two decimals. Bounces and Complaints are shares of the emails Jounce tracked for them. That’s because Jounce started tracking those two for automations later than it started sending. Each rate shows its count in parentheses.

When there is more than one complaint and they reach 0.1% of those emails, the word Complaints turns amber. A line reads Complaints of 0.1% or more make every email you send harder to get into the inbox. Send only to people who asked for your emails.

One complaint on its own never turns it amber, whatever its rate reads.

Jounce already stops sending to each person who complained. To find which automation drew the complaints, open each one’s insights page and read Complaints under its cards. Keep sending only to people who asked. See Why does Analytics say complaints are high?

What an automation’s status changes

  • Pausing keeps every number. Nobody new enters, so Entered stops growing until you relaunch.
  • Ready in the table means the automation is launched, but Jounce has switched automations off for now, for everyone who uses Jounce. It picks up on its own once Jounce switches automations back on.
  • Deleting an automation removes its row. Its people drop out of Entered and In automations now. But the emails it sent, with their opens and clicks, stay in the cards. See Delete an automation.

An automation that sent before Jounce counted sends

If an automation ran before Jounce started counting its emails, Jounce has its opens but not how many emails it sent. So its row reads a dash for Sent, Open, and Click.

While any automation is like this, Emails sent and every rate on the tab read a dash too. A line under the cards says why. See Why do my automation’s numbers show a dash?
