How Jounce counts new subscribers

Short answer

A person counts as new on the day they were added, however they joined and whatever their status is now. Deleted people stop counting, and the card compares the range with the same length of time before it.

New subscribers counts people by the day they were added to your list. How they joined doesn’t matter. A signup form, a CSV file, Add subscriber and the developer API all count the same.

Their status today doesn’t matter either. Someone who signed up and hasn’t confirmed yet counts on the day they signed up. Someone who joined and later unsubscribed still counts on the day they joined.

Who stops counting

Someone you delete leaves the count, even for the day they joined. So the number for a past period can fall after you clean up your list. Adding them back puts them on the day they first joined, not on today. Someone whose address bounced stays counted; they are still on your list, marked Bounced.

The change under the card

The line under the number compares the range with the same length of time right before it. Over the last 30 days, that is the 30 days before those.

If 84 people joined this time and 61 the time before, the card reads +38% vs prior 30 days, with a green arrow. Fewer than before shows a red arrow and a minus sign.

If nobody joined in the earlier period, there’s nothing to compare. So the card shows the label and no change.

The bars

The chart splits the range into bars: one per day for 7 and 30 days, one per week for 90 days, and one per calendar month for 12 months.

The range counts back from today, so the last bar is the day, week, or month still in progress. It is usually shorter than the rest. The small line of bars on the card traces the last few bars of the chart.

Days start and end at midnight Pacific time, which may not be your local midnight. See Choose a time range.

Not a net change

The Total subscribers card carries no change line under its number. That’s because Jounce counts who joined, and who holds each status today. It doesn’t keep a daily count of your list’s size. To see who left, check the Unsubscribed card and the Subscribers by status list, which counts everyone, sendable or not.
