Dead addresses

Short answer

A dead address is a mailbox that refused mail for good from any sender on Jounce. Jounce skips it in every send, from every workspace, and a form signup can’t bring it back.

Emails sent through Jounce share one sending reputation with every other workspace on Jounce. A mailbox that refuses mail for good refuses it from everyone. So Jounce keeps one list of those addresses and skips them in every send, whichever workspace they belong to.

How an address gets on the list

A bounce for good, from any sender on Jounce. Almost always the mailbox is gone: an old job, a closed account, a domain that lapsed. Now and then a mail server refuses an email for good for a reason of its own, and a living address gets on the list with it.

What you see

  • Nothing on the person’s row, unless the bounce came from one of your own sends. Their status can still read Subscribed while every send skips them.
  • When many addresses in one send bounced for good, its results page adds A lot of these addresses are dead. Jounce skips them from now on, so look at where this audience came from. See The results page.

Emails your automations send skip the same addresses.

What doesn’t clear it

  • A form signup. Jounce sends no confirmation email to a dead address. If the person opens an older confirmation link, the page reads This subscription can’t be confirmed. See What subscribers see when they confirm.
  • Changing another subscriber’s address to it. Jounce refuses: Mail to that address has permanently bounced, so the address wasn’t changed. Double-check it before trying again.
  • Deleting and re-adding them, or an import.

Nothing in the app takes an address off the list.

What to do

Ask the person for an address that works, and change it on their page. See Change a subscriber’s email address. If it’s the only address they have, leave the record as it is. Jounce won’t try it again, and it costs you nothing to keep.
