Coming back after an unsubscribe, a bounce, or a complaint
Short answer
Someone who unsubscribed comes back by filling in one of your forms and clicking the confirmation link. Someone who bounced usually comes back when you change their address to a working one; a spam complaint can’t be lifted.
| Status | Who lifts it | How |
|---|---|---|
| Unsubscribed | The person | They fill in one of your forms and click the link in the confirmation email. |
| Bounced | You | Change their address to one that works, on their page. |
| Complained | Nobody | It stays. |
Unsubscribed: they come back through a form
Consent is theirs to give, so nothing you do in Jounce puts an unsubscribed person back on your list. If you add them by hand, Jounce tells you: ⟨their address⟩ is already on your list, and unsubscribed. Only they can resubscribe, through one of your forms.
An import leaves their status as it is. Delete and re-add them, and they come back still unsubscribed. Change their address, and they stay unsubscribed under the new one.
The way back is a form. Send them a link to any of your forms. When they fill it in, Jounce emails them the confirmation link. It does this even if that form doesn’t ask new signups to confirm. Their click puts them back as Subscribed.
A form also brings back an unsubscribed person you deleted. The signup adds them again as Unsubscribed, and their click on the confirmation link brings them back. See How double opt-in works.
Bounced: you fix the address
A bounce belongs to the mailbox, not the person. Open their page and select Change beside their address. Type the working address.
After the change, most people become Subscribed under the new address, with their history intact. Someone who had also unsubscribed becomes Unsubscribed instead, and only a form brings them back, as above. Someone who never confirmed their signup becomes Unconfirmed, and Jounce emails them the confirmation link. See Change a subscriber’s email address.

A form can’t fix a bounce. Jounce sends no confirmation email to an address that bounced. So a signup from the same address brings nothing back. If you deleted the person, that signup adds them again as Bounced.
Complained: it stays
A spam complaint is the strongest way a person can ask you to stop. Jounce honors it for good.
A form signup sends them no confirmation email. An older confirmation link reads This subscription can’t be confirmed. If you deleted the person, a signup adds them again as Complained. Change their address, and the complaint stays with them. If someone tells you they pressed Report spam by mistake, nothing in Jounce lifts it.
There’s no status to edit
No menu on a person’s row or page sets their status by hand. It moves only through the paths above and the person’s own actions: a confirmation click, an unsubscribe, a spam complaint, or a bounce. See Subscriber statuses.
