Why does it say someone bounced?

Short answer

Their mailbox refused your email for good, usually because the address has a typo or no longer exists. To protect your sending reputation, Jounce stopped sending to it, and changing the address on their page brings most people back.

Your email reached everyone else. That one mailbox refused it for good, so Jounce marked the person Bounced. Jounce won’t send to the address again, to protect your sending reputation.

Why it bounced

  • A typo in the address, such as a misspelled domain.
  • The mailbox is gone: an old job, a closed account, a domain that lapsed.
  • Now and then, a mail server refuses an email for good for a reason of its own. If you’re sure the address works, see Dead addresses.

A full inbox, or a server asking Jounce to try again later, doesn’t bounce anyone. Those people get your next send as usual.

Why it showed up days later

Bounces come back from the mail provider after the send, some a day or two later. So a person can turn Bounced well after the send finished. Bounces, complaints, and unsubscribes says when the news arrives.

Fix the address

  1. Open Audience and choose Bounced in the Status menu above the list. The list shows everyone who bounced.
The Status menu open above the subscribers list, with the Status button ringed.
  2. Select the person. Their page opens with Bounced under their name.
  3. Select Change beside their address, type the working one, and select Change address.
The top of a bounced subscriber's page, with Bounced under the name, the Change button ringed beside the address, and Delete subscriber at the right.

Most people become Subscribed under the new address, with their history intact. Someone who unsubscribed becomes Unsubscribed instead. Someone who never confirmed their signup becomes Unconfirmed. See Change a subscriber’s email address.

If you have no other address for them, leave the record as it is. Jounce won’t try that address again, and it costs you nothing to keep.

If a lot of people bounced

The send’s results page says so under its numbers: Bounces ran higher than usual for this list. When it’s worse, it reads Many of these addresses are dead, so Jounce now skips them. Check where this audience came from.

Bounces count toward the rate that turns on the banner at the top of the app. You don’t have to delete bounced subscribers, since Jounce already leaves them out. But a list with this many dead addresses is worth a second look before you use it again. See Sending warnings and pauses.
