What a pause holds and what keeps working

Short answer

A pause holds campaign sends, an A/B test’s send to the rest of your list, and automation emails until sending resumes, but an email it stops mid-send doesn’t finish. Test sends, confirmation emails, forms, imports, and editing keep working.

A pause stops the emails that reach your list and nothing else. Here is each thing you might do while paused, and what happens.

You… While sending is paused
Press the send button The page after you send reads Sending paused, then the reason, then This email is waiting behind the pause and goes out once it lifts; if it’s more than a day late by then, it waits for your OK instead, with Get help under Back to emails. Its label reads Sending paused.
Were mid-send on a big email Jounce stops it where it is, and it doesn’t go out on its own once sending resumes. Its page says how far it got, with Get help under Back to emails.
Have a scheduled email It waits. Its label reads Sending paused, and it goes out once sending resumes. If it’s more than a day late by then, it waits for your OK instead, and its label reads Needs your OK.
Have an A/B test running The test emails already went out. The winner round, the send to the rest of your list, waits and finishes once sending resumes. If it’s more than a day late by then, Jounce won’t send it on its own, and its label reads On hold. Write to hello@jounce.com to send the rest.
Run automations They keep tracking people, but each email they would send waits and goes out once sending resumes. Resume subscribers on an automation resumes no one: Jounce answers Sending is paused on this workspace and gives the reason.
Send a test email It goes out. Test sends are how you check an email while paused.
Get form signups Forms and pages keep working, and confirmation emails still go out.
Import, edit, see results Everything else works as usual.
Create a workspace If you’re an admin of the paused workspace, the one you create starts paused too.

A pause belongs to one workspace. Your other workspaces carry on, unless one is paused too, or you made it while you were an admin of this paused one.

Careful An email or A/B winner round held a day or less still goes out when sending resumes, even if its moment has passed. An Admin or Manager can stop one that no longer makes sense. Before sending resumes, open its menu on the Emails page and choose Cancel sending. See Cancel a scheduled or sending email.

When sending resumes

The banner leaves. Held emails go out on their own within a few minutes, in the order they were due. Automation emails follow on their own a little later.

After a pause for bounces or spam complaints, your list warms up again from the first daily limit, as a new workspace’s does. A held email bigger than the limit doesn’t go, and one that doesn’t fit yet waits for room. See Why can’t I email my whole list yet?

A scheduled email that’s more than a day late by then doesn’t go out on its own. It waits for your OK, and its label reads Needs your OK. Open it from the Emails page and choose Send now or Reschedule. See Why does my email say Won’t send?

A winner round that’s more than a day late doesn’t go out on its own either. Its label reads On hold. Write to hello@jounce.com to send the rest.
